Hair loss impacts about 35 million men and 21 million women in the USA only. Over 40 percent of men will have noticeable hair loss by the age of 35, while 65 percent of women will have noticeable hair loss by the time they are 60. More than 95% of hair thinning in men is male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia. Male pattern baldness is characterized by hair receding from the lateral sides of the forehead (known as a “receding hairline”) and/or a thinning crown (balding to the area known as the “vertex”. Both become more pronounced until they eventually meet, leaving a horseshoe-shaped ring of hair around the back of the head.
The hair follicle has an oil gland that contains the enzyme 5-alpha reductase which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). When DHT binds to receptors in hair follicles genetically programmed to be sensitive to DHT, the hair shaft progressively shrinks due to low scalp oxygen. This process is referred to as hair miniaturization.
Oxygen deficiency or hypoxia exists in a balding scalp, and the blood supply around the follicle in balding areas is deficient compared to the blood supply around follicles with normal hair growth. Oxygen starvation leads to limited hair growth and compromised cellular repair mechanisms.

The strip also referred to as the Follicular Unit Transplantation or FUT is the traditional method of hair transplantation. With the FUT a large section of scalp (strip) is cut (harvested) from the head and the scalp is then sewn together. Next, the hair follicles or grafts including their bulbs are separated from each other into units of one to four hairs by the technicians and inserted to tiny slits in the balding area. The follicles with a single hair are placed in the front to define the hairline. FUT is surgically invasive, has a longer recovery time, and leaves a scar.
The main differences between the Neograft™ FUE and the traditional strip method are: NO surgical removal of a strip of skin. NO scar so hair can be worn short. Women often lose their hair in a more diffused pattern around the head. The back of the head also retains the most hair for most women for harvesting as well.
With the NeoGraft™ FUE donor hair follicles are removed with gentle pneumatic pressure significantly lowering the risk of damaging the follicle, or driving the follicle further into the skin, as sometimes happens in traditional surgery. The result is much lower risk of any abscess occuring. The technician controls the pressure which is set to each individual’s type of scalp. Some people have a very tight scalp, others a lax scalp. Some individual’s follicles are deeper, and more firmly anchored than others’. With traditional surgery these differences may require more tugging and pulling on the follicle by the technician increasing the chances of damaging the follicle. Transplanted hair will remain visible for two or three weeks and then the new transplanted hair will fall out. The bulb of the hair remains dormant under the skin for six to twelve weeks. The number of procedures depends upon various factors such as the extent of your hair loss, the hair density in the donor area, age, and gender. Most people have the results the expect in just one or two hair transplant sessions in which thousands of hairs are transplanted in follicular units of one to four hairs each.
