NeoGraft FUE Seattle

In the world of hair restoration there are many methods in performing hair transplants. The traditional way of performing such procedure has been the strip method or FUT (follicular unit transplantation). It is still the most commonly used method. It does, however; have major drawbacks: It is surgically invasive as it involves scarring caused by a linear scalpel incision. The wound created by the incision is then stitched up or stapled together.

On the other hand, the NeoGraft™ FUE (follicular unit extraction) hair transplant method is a revolutionary and FDA approved Automated Hair Transplant System. It is the most desired and natural method of transplanting hair. The NeoGraft™ FUE is a very safe, minimally invasive, relatively minor procedure. With the FUE method there is no need no need to excise a piece of the scalp because the follicles are removed directly from the donor area using a tiny 1mm punch and forceps. In comparison to the linear strip method, follicular unit extraction (FUE) does NOT require the surgical removal of a section of the scalp that can result in a visible scar at the back of the scalp.

With the NeoGraft™ FUE, your own natural hair follicles are used from the back of your scalp with NO scalpel, sutures or staples. As a result, you do not have a linear donor scar or invasive scalp procedure.

Answers…

1. What percentage of the population is impacted by hair loss?

Hair loss impacts about 35 million men and 21 million women in the USA only. Over 40 percent of men will have noticeable hair loss by the age of 35, while 65 percent of women will have noticeable hair loss by the time they are 60. More than 95% of hair thinning in men is male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia. Male pattern baldness is characterized by hair receding from the lateral sides of the forehead (known as a “receding hairline”) and/or a thinning crown (balding to the area known as the “vertex”. Both become more pronounced until they eventually meet, leaving a horseshoe-shaped ring of hair around the back of the head.

2. How exactly does hair loss take place?

The hair follicle has an oil gland that contains the enzyme 5-alpha reductase which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). When DHT binds to receptors in hair follicles genetically programmed to be sensitive to DHT, the hair shaft progressively shrinks due to low scalp oxygen. This process is referred to as hair miniaturization.

3. What is the connection between hair loss and oxygen deficiency?

Oxygen deficiency or hypoxia exists in a balding scalp, and the blood supply around the follicle in balding areas is deficient compared to the blood supply around follicles with normal hair growth. Oxygen starvation leads to limited hair growth and compromised cellular repair mechanisms.

4. What is NeoGraft™ FUE?

The Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE by NeoGraft™ is an Automated Hair Restoration System that is the result of ten years of research and development, offering the next generation in hair transplantation and achieving a more reproducible and aesthetically appealing hairline. NeoGraft™ is widely used in Europe and Asia is FDA approved in the US. Over 18,000 hair transplants have been done with this device in the last two years with phenomenal results. With the automated transplantation provided by NeoGraft™ FUE, the time required for surgery is less than HALF the time of a standard transplant procedure. Patients can return to normal activity within several days.

5. What is the traditional method of hair transplantation?

The strip also referred to as the Follicular Unit Transplantation or FUT is the traditional method of hair transplantation. With the FUT a large section of scalp (strip) is cut (harvested) from the head and the scalp is then sewn together. Next, the hair follicles or grafts including their bulbs are separated from each other into units of one to four hairs by the technicians and inserted to tiny slits in the balding area. The follicles with a single hair are placed in the front to define the hairline. FUT is surgically invasive, has a longer recovery time, and leaves a scar.

6. What are the advantages of NeoGraft™ FUE over the FUT strip metod?

The main differences between the Neograft™ FUE and the traditional strip method are: NO surgical removal of a strip of skin. NO scar so hair can be worn short. Much LESS painful than the strip method. Other advantages are minimal risk of shock hair fallout or bleeding, can be used to repair scars from prior strip procedures, and can treat both men and women.

7. How are grafts harvested and now many can be transplanted in one session and how?

The maximum number of grafts or follicles that can be transplanted in one session with the FUE is 2,400. For most patients this is enough to cover the area of concern. For those who require more grafts, another session or two will be needed two to three months later. The FUE procedure using the NeoGraft™ removes individual hair follicles from the scalp in their naturally occurring groupings of about 1-4 hairs. NeoGraft™ revolutionized FUE hair transplantation by using 1.0 mm punch grafts that allows for a higher percentage of survivable hair grafts and a more natural look.

8. Does the NeoGraft™ FUE procedure involve cutting the scalp?

NeoGraft FUE does NOT involve incisions like the strip method which is still used by most doctors today. With this revolutionary technique, there is no cutting of the scalp and therefore no suturing and no visible scarring. Patients can leave the office with a little or no bandage and will be able to gently rinse their hair and go back to work the next day.

9. Will any scarring occur with the NeoGraft™ FUE?

There will be no scarring associated with the NeoGraft™ FUE as the device allows for hair follicle harvesting without any need for the common linear scar as is the case with the FUT method.

10. What are the best areas for follicle harvesting with the NeoGraft™ FUE?

Men with male pattern baldness will have hair growing at the sides and the back of their head, this is where hair is harvested from for transplantation. Women often lose their hair in a more diffused pattern around the head. The back of the head also retains the most hair for most women for harvesting as well.

11. Will the NeoGraft™ FUE device damage the hair follicle?

With the NeoGraft™ FUE donor hair follicles are removed with gentle pneumatic pressure significantly lowering the risk of damaging the follicle, or driving the follicle further into the skin, as sometimes happens in traditional surgery. The result is much lower risk of any abscess occuring. The technician controls the pressure which is set to each individual’s type of scalp. Some people have a very tight scalp, others a lax scalp. Some individual’s follicles are deeper, and more firmly anchored than others’. With traditional surgery these differences may require more tugging and pulling on the follicle by the technician increasing the chances of damaging the follicle. With the NeoGraft™ FUE device, the pneumatic pressure is set to the type of scalp and the instrument applies just the right amount of pressure to remove the follicle.

12. How long will it take for the transplanted hair to grow in?

Transplanted hair will remain visible for two or three weeks and then the new transplanted hair will fall out. The bulb of the hair remains dormant under the skin for six to twelve weeks. After that time a new hair will grow from the bulb. Significant hair will grow in by 4-6 months and full hair growth is visible by 9 to 12 months.

13. How many procedures are needed per patient?

The number of procedures depends upon various factors such as the extent of your hair loss, the hair density in the donor area, age, and gender. Most people have the results the expect in just one or two hair transplant sessions in which thousands of hairs are transplanted in follicular units of one to four hairs each. In general, most patients over 50 can be satisfied with one or two procedures to treat a specific area of hair loss. With younger patients, additional transplants may be needed due to further hair loss later in life.

14. What is the cost for the NeoGraft™ FUE?

The cost of the FUE procedure depends on the transplantation area to be covered and the desired outcome per individual which in turn determines the number of grafts to be transplanted. The cost as well as financing options will be discussed with you prior to the procedure at the time of your complimentary consult.
